Beyond the Belly Band - A Removable Interactive Journal Piece
Today I’m working in my Highland Love Journal with another idea for making a belly band do a little more than simply hold something on the page.
The belly band itself stays attached to the journal, while the entire interactive piece slips free. Once removed, it can be opened, explored and written in without having to work around the journal page.
There is quite a bit tucked into this one. A flip-up section creates another layer to discover, a hidden gusseted pocket gives several journal cards a home, and an angled pocket across the front adds yet another place for ephemera. Altogether, each finished piece holds four to five cards while still remaining a full removable element on the page.
For the Highland Love version, I used that beautiful misty forest landscape, touches of purple and tartan, delicate lace, and the wonderful portrait of the Highland woman. I love how she seems to belong right there among the trees.
I also share a second finished version so you can see how the same construction can take on an entirely different personality simply by changing the papers and details.
This is one of those projects where the practical part—creating plenty of writing and storage space—gets to live right alongside the beautiful part. And because it slips right out of the belly band, nothing is lost to the binding or placement on the page.
